What is the difference between Metaverse and Digital Twin?
What is Metaverse?
A metaverse is a network of 3D virtual worlds focused on social connection. A virtual-reality space in which users can interact with a computer-generated environment and other users. Universal Scene Description (USD) is the main component of Metaverse.
What is Virtual World? A world that does not exist physically, and is a computer-simulated environment. Grand Theft Auto game series is an example of a virtual 3D world.
What is Digital Twin?
A digital twin is a virtual representation that serves as the real-time digital counterpart of a physical object or process. In simple words, a Digital environment of the Physical World. A 3D CAD model of an office with an IoT device is an example of a Digital Twin.
What is IoT (Internet of Things)? Devices that can be connected with the Internet and interact with other devices without Human interference. The most common example is Security Camera or Smart Watches.
Are there Similarities between Metaverse and Digital Twin?
Yes, a lot! Both Metaverse and DT are Virtual worlds, basically, a 3D computer-generated simulated environment that can be accessed by devices such as Mobile phones, computers, smart devices, and VR headsets.
The softwares which are used to develop Metaverse and DT are also the same. We will share a few names later. Microsoft and Nvidia are big names which are in both of the technology.
What is the Difference between Metaverse and Digital Twin?
As they both are Virtual World, Digital Twin describes a physical world in a virtual simulation. Data from IoT devices are fundamental to building Digital Twin. In other words – To make Digital Twin accurate, IoT data will be added such as Room temperature. Because Digital Twin is the Twin of a physical object which can be as huge as mother Earth. Also, in the virtual world, Digital Twin appearance has to be if not exact then similar to the physical world (just like Twin Brothers!). Digital Twin applications are Smart Factory, Smart Building, Smart City and many more where Smart objects are vital.
On the other hand, Metaverse neither need IoT data nor, physical object appearance. Metaverse is generally an imaginary world in which rules of Physics can be changed (In short: Human avatar can Fly). Metaverse is for Entertainment, Social networking, Education, and many more in which Virtual simulation can participate.
Developers and Softwares required for Metaverse and Digital Twin?
For Digital Twin organisations can use Microsoft Azure, Nvidia Omniverse, Bentley’s iTwin, Unity 3D, Unreal. Open Source Javascript 3D library, C# for IoT.
For Metaverse, organisations can use Facebook developer’s tool, Nvidia Omniverse, Unity 3D, Unreal engine. Open Source Javascript 3D
